As
we begin a new year, we think about how lucky we are to have the
people and things we love around us; to have a good year.
You
don't need me to tell you how terrible the earthquake/tsunami
in Southeast Asia last week was. However, it is hard to really
conceptualize something so violent as to kill 150,000 people and
leave millions homeless, not to mention, something so unexpected.
I
was almost in Indonesia last month. I was to accompany one of
the bands on my record label on a tour there, that we ended up
cancelling due to other obligations. We would have been there
just 6 days before the tsunami.
This
isn't important because of anything to do with myself or with
the band. It's important because most people tend to think of
that part of the world as being much different than us. It's not.
They drive the same cars as us, they live by the same means, and
some of them listen to punk rock. It was these people just like
us who were hit by a tragedy over 50 times worse than September
11th.
You
might not think you can make a difference, especially if you have
little to give. But even if your donation funds just part of an
aid worker's plane fare, you are directly helping save lives.
After a bit of research, I decided to give through Oxfam.
I encourage you to do the same, through whatever agency you are
comfortable with.
